1. The most intelligent, responsive, and obedient local shepherd dogs in Germany were bred to create what is now known as the German Shepherd.
2. This breed was responsible for herding sheep and protecting flocks from predators.
3. They were not considered pets or companions, but rather servants for farmers.
4. German Shepherds are famous for their intelligent, loyal, and hardworking natures.
5. They are often used as guides, therapy, search-and-rescue, police, military, and narcotics and explosives detecting dogs.
6. While they can come across as aloof to strangers, they are known to be wonderful family dogs.
7. The breed was named Deutscher Schäferhund by von Stephanitz, literally translating to “German Shepherd Dog”.
8. The breed was so named due to its original purpose of assisting shepherds in herding and protecting sheep.
9. Horand von Grafrath (January 1, 1895 – after 1899) (formerly Hektor Linksrhein) was the first German Shepherd Dog and the genetic basis for modern German Shepherds.
